MD 4:
From the Washington DC border to just past the Suitland Pkwy, MD 4 is a driveway-free 4-lane expressway. East of that, it becomes a full freeway until MD 259, where it will be upgraded to an expressway south to Port Republic. Plans exist to upgrade the MD 4 expressway to a freeway from the west end of the current freeway at MD 223 to the Capital Beltway.

Future Improvements:

Segment Planned Improvements
Washington DC border to I-95 A $1 million project for pedestrian safety improvements along the MD 4 expressway from Wallers Lane to Parkland Drive is planned for construction in 2005.
I-95 to MD 223 at Meadows The 4-lane expressway is planned to be upgraded to a 4-lane freeway:
  • Short-term Improvements: An interchange is planned at the Suitland Parkway. ROW purchase will begin in 2005 and construction will begin in 2008.
  • Long-term Improvements: $1,615,000 was appropriated in 2004 to plan for the eventual freeway upgrade. No funding is currently in place for further action on this plan.
MD 260 at Lyons Creek to MD 264 at Port Republic A variety of improvements are planned to upgrade the 4-lane arterial segment of MD 4:
  • Short-term Improvements: Intersection improvements are planned at MD 263 in 2005 and MD 231 in 2007.
  • Mid-term Improvements: MD 4 will be widened to 6-lanes through Prince Frederick. Engineering and ROW purchase is complete, but funding is currently not available for construction.
  • Long-term Improvements: The 4-lane Arterial segment will be upgraded to an expressway, with access only at public roads. Access control purchases are currently underway by willing sellers, but only $953,000 per year is available to buy access rights from properties along the highway.
Patuxent River to MD 235

The only improvement planned for the 2-lane expressway segment of MD 4 is a $200,000 project for geometric improvements at the Fairgrounds Road intersection. The project is scheduled for construction in 2006.

MD 5:
MD 5 is an expressway without driveways from US 301 north of Waldorf nearly to the Suitland Parkway. The Waldorf Bypass is an expressway. From Waldorf south to MD 235, the existing 4-lane highway is planned to be upgraded to an expressway, including a bypass of Hughesville.
