Detailed Description:
Few can disagree that US 301 is a very important main thoroughfare as it travels through the western and eastern shores of Maryland. For its entire length in Maryland, US 301 is at least four lanes, although it is currently a boulevard and arterial highway south of US 50. US 301 is often used as a alternate route for I-95 thru-traffic in order to avoid the inevitable congestion and road construction of the Baltimore-Washington area. This through traffic, as well as commuter traffic into Washington and Baltimore, has led to calls for improvements to US 301 south of US 50. The current plan is to upgrade existing US 301 from the Virginia border to MD 225 in La Plata to expressway standards. This project would allow at-grade intersections and traffic signals to remain on the highway, but would relocate driveways to intersecting roads or possibly to parallel service roads. A multimodal study is planned to determine how to best upgrade US 301 from La Plata to US 50.
