US 49:
US 49 is an old expressway, the first large-scale 4-lane non-Interstate project to be built in Mississippi, from Gulfport to Yazoo City. The 4-lane highway was built by paving a second set of lines to the existing 2-lane road. Today, the older set of lanes, usually the southbound lanes, are very old and have a substandard design. In some areas, the old lanes are being reconstructed. MDOT would like to convert the entire highway to an interstate-compatible freeway, but the money for that project currently does not exist. Instead, the most congested segments will be upgraded or bypassed first.

Yazoo City to Sidon 2-lane Highway 4-laning is a long-range proposal under Vision 21.
Sidon to US 82 2-lane Highway Engineering began in 2004. This project is in the STIP for ROW purchase. It will be built as a 5-lane boulevard.

US 51:
There are two short high-speed 4-lane highway segments of US 51 in northern Mississippi.

The southern segment runs between Tie Plant and Grenada. Because this parallels I-55 a few miles to the east, the 4-lane arterial serves local traffic and, along with MS 8, acts as a spur from I-55.

The northern segment is located in Coldwater. This mile-long segment is a divided 4-lane expressway with no paved shoulders and a 45 mph speed limit. There are no driveways on the expressway, and access for the adjourning properties is provided by frontage roads. This expressway segment exists because of traffic in downtown Coldwater. I-55 carries through traffic through the area and is located less than 1 1/2 miles to the east of the US 51 expressway.

History:

Segment Activity
Grenada segment completed in 2000
Coldwater segment very old

Junction Log - Coldwater Segment:

Junction Type of Access
The only major intersection on it is Central Ave 4-way stop, which carries Scenic Route 304 to the west towards Arkabutla Lake.

MS 53:
Two different groups are advocating the 4-laning of MS 53. The Gulf Coast Metropolitan Planning Organization calls for a 4-lane highway from US 49 to Lizana (about 9 miles) as a long-range proposal. The Vision 21 Plan of the Mississippi Legislature calls for a larger plan, calling for a 4-lane highway from US 49 to I-59 an immediate priority.

MS 57:
The MS 63 expressway will become the MS 57 expressway starting at a point one mile east of the current east end of the MS 57/63 multiplex. Then, for 11 miles, it will run north paralleling existing MS 57 one mile to the east. From there it will follow the existing routing of MS 57 north to State Line. The new highway will bypass State Line to the east. It will be slightly less than a mile away from Alabama when crossing the Wayne / Greene County Line and will meet up with existing US 45 one mile north of its entrance into Mississippi.
