Detailed Description:
NC 109 is a 2-lane expressway (commonly known as a “super-2”) from Denton, which is located in extreme southern Davidson county, to Thomasville. The northern end of the super-2 is just south of I-85. Prior to the completion of the super 2 expressway, the original alignments for NC 109 followed the following roads from north to south: Fisher Ferry Road, Denton Road and Old NC Highway 109. Intersections along the super-2 are marked with either right turn lanes or both left and right turn lanes. These turn lanes use small pieces of the shoulder, which has a average width along the highway of 3 feet. Motorists who use NC 109 south of Thomasville are primarily bound to go towards the High Rock and Badin Lake areas with Denton as the only incorporated town along the way. There are no plans to dualize NC 109 south of Denton towards Troy, Mt Gilead, Wadesboro and South Carolina since NC 109 has low traffic volumes. Between Wadesboro and Troy resurfacing was done in summer 2004, creating dedicated turn lanes at key intersections.
There are no plans to dualize NC 109 along the super 2 segment. However, the 2 lane segment from Business I-85 in Thomasville to I-40 / US 311 in Winston-Salem will be multi-laned with a bypass around Wallburg in northern Davidson County. The highway will begin partial construction in 2005 but ROW and construction on the northern segment won't occur for the next several years. The commuter traffic and suburban sprawl along this stretch of NC 109 are likely the most important contributing factors for the widening.

Continues as an expressway for about a quarter of mile then becomes a city street in Denton

Note:
Despite the fact that the NCDOT does not officially acknowledge controlled access or limited access 2-lane highways as expressways in its Strategic Corridors plan, we at Expressway Site believe that these two lane highways can be considered to be super-2 expressways.
