New Jersey...

Eisenhower Parkway (Essex CR 609) &
JFK Parkway (Essex CR 649):
Summary:
- Both parkways are located in Essex County, in northeast New Jersey.
- John Fitzgerald Kennedy Parkway is an expressway from Hobart gap Road to River Road just past NJ 24 / NJ 124.
- Eisenhower Parkway is an expressway from CR 510 (South Orange Ave) to I-280.
Detailed Description:
JFK Parkway is a 4 mile expressway built during the 1970's to improve facilitated thru-traffic for Short Hills mall traffic from River Road / NJ 24 through Short Hills and into Livingston. The current 2-lane road
infrastructure parallel to JFK Parkway, including CR 527, cannot handle mall traffic as well as future traffic demands. In the late 1960's, another expressway, the Eisenhower Parkway had been partially built a few miles to the west as a thru-truck route between I-280 and the NJ 24 freeway, as well as northward toward I-80. However, the Eisenhower Parkway was not completed south of Orange Ave to connect with NJ 24, though there is a fully graded and partially paved interchange built at 24 with the "Triborough Parkway" (the originally intended name for the fully complete Eisenhower Parkway). It also was not completed north of I-280, requiring trucks to use Passaic Avenue or other surface streets to I-80. Because of the incompletion, thru-trucks between I-280 and NJ 24 must use Eisenhower Parkway to CR 510 (South Orange Ave) towards JFK parkway and vice versa. Thru-trucks are prohibited to use Livingston Ave in Livingston; if they continue straight instead of turning onto South Orange Ave, JFK Parkway turns into Livingston Avenue after another mile. Local deliveries are exempt from this truck ban. If Triborough Road (Eisenhower Parkway Extension) would have been built as planned, the priority of building JFK Parkway would have been lower due to the nearby, parallel continuous north-south four lane expressway connecting NJ 24 to I-280.
