Detailed Description:

TX 288 connects Houston with the Brazosport industrial area, which includes towns such as Freeport, Clute, and Lake Jackson. This area includes oil production areas, the largest commercial shrimp fleet on the Gulf Coast, and factories making chemicals and also goods such as pacemakers. As a demonstration of the importance of this area, the Port of Freeport is designated a Foreign Trade Zone. In addition, it serves beach areas such as Quintana.

TX 288 starts in downtown Houston as a depressed freeway and soon returns to ground level as a freeway with frontage roads and a very wide median. After passing Farm-Market Route 518, TX 288 becomes a rural expressway. The expressway is very straight and flat, and passes through ranchlands for most of its journey. However, residential development is constantly pushing southward in the Pearland and Manvel area. For more information on Houston’s freeway system, see Erik Slotbloom’s excellent book called Houston Freeways.
