CA 37:
CA 37 is an expressway through Marin and Sonoma counties between these two junctions. It is generally called the Black Point Cutoff. East of CA 121, it becomes a two-lane road ("Sears Point Rd.") as it leaves Sonoma County and enters Solona County.

CA 41:
CA 41 is an expressway from CA 198 in Lemoore to CA 99 in Fresno. 
 

History:

December 2000 Construction began on upgrade from a 2-lane expressway to a 4-lane expressway from Elkhorn St to the town of Easton.

CA 46:
CA 46 is planned to be upgraded to an expressway from US 101 to CA 99.

Airport Rd to CA 41 Planning began in December 1999. Construction will begin in Summer 2005. The project will be completed in 2008 or 2009.

San Luis Obispo / Kern county line to Keck’s Rd Construction will start in Summer 2006 with completion scheduled for Fall 2007.

CA 49:
A Sutter Creek Bypass is planned to be built as a Super-2 expressway. CA 49 is also planned to be an expressway from Grass Valley to 2.5 miles south of Grass Valley.

US 50:
US 50 has two short expressway segments, both east of Placerville. No extension of the highway is planned. 
 

 

US Alt 50:
Although this is not an official designation, in 1999 a new US highway was signed in California. Of the section from US 50 at Pollock Pines to CA 88 at Picketts Junction, 20 miles is a Super-2 expressway. 

 

CA 53:
The CA 53 expressway in Lake County runs from CA 29 to CA 20. 
 

 

CA 58:
CA 58 is a desert expressway with a wide natural median from Barstow to about 5 miles east of US 395. Although the access control is somewhat loose, there is a fence along the highway so you can’t get off just anywhere. It narrows to two lanes there and runs that way through Kramer Junction (intersection of US 395). West of US 395, CA 58 again becomes an expressway until Mojave. The total distance between Mojave and Barstow is about 60 miles. There are short expressway sections between CA-14 and CA-99, but mostly it's full freeway, including the new Mojave bypass.

 

History:

Date Activity
The CA 58 expressway between US 395 and Mojave is at least 30 years old.
1992 From 5 miles east of US 395 to Barstow was completed. This expressway was primarily built for truckers running from Bakersfield to Needles along I-40 or Las Vegas along I-15.

 

CA 59:
CA 59 will be an expressway from CA 99 to Bellvue Ave in Merced. 
 

 

CA 60:
On CA 60, there is an expressway from Gilman Springs Road east of Moreno Valley to I-10 in Beaumont.

 

CA 65:
A short section of CA 65 expressway exists from I-80 to Lincoln. This is planned to be extended north to Olivehurst in three stages. First, a freeway-grade Lincoln Bypass would be built. Then, a Wheatland Bypass would be built. Finally, the connecting segments would be filled in. CA 65 is also planned to be an expressway from Porterville to the Kern / Tulare county line.

CA 70:
CA 70 is a Super-2 expressway from Cornelius Avenue in East Nicolaus to McGowan Parkway in Olivehurst. This is planned to be upgraded to a 4-lane expressway, and at the same time, be extended south to CA 99. CA 70 is also planned to be an expressway from the Yuba / Butte county line to the Oroville / Thermalito Bypass, which is a freeway. Construction will last from 2008 to 2017.

CA 71:
CA 71 is an expressway in Pomona from I-10 to CA 60. This segment is planned to be upgraded to a freeway with construction starting in 2005. There is a Super-2 expressway segment from CA 83 to the CA 91 freeway in Corona. This will be upgraded to a 4-lane expressway. 
 

 

CA 76:
An expressway from I-5 to North Santa Fe Ave in Oceanside. East of that, CA 76 is a non-expressway 4-lane road. The expressway was built with 4 lanes with ROW for an upgrade to 6 lanes.

CA 78:
CA 78 is an expressway along its multiplex with CA 86. Along this stretch, a Westmorland Bypass is planned to be built by 2015. East of that, CA 78 will follow a new Brawley Bypass around Brawley to the junction with the future CA 111 expressway. For more info see CA 111. Then, CA 78 is planned to follow its own expressway alignment from CA 111 to the east of the CA 115 multiplex to be complete by 2020. From there, a CA 115 expressway will extend south to I-8. 
 

 

CA 84:
CA 84 is an expressway, called the Bayfront Expressway, from US 101 to the Dumbarton Bridge. CA 84 is planned to be built as an expressway from I-680 to I-580. 
 

History:

August 1, 2003 Project completed to widen CA 84 from 4 to 6 lanes and improve the intersections at University Avenue, Willow Road, and Marsh Road.

 

 

CA 86:
CA 86 is a freeway from I-10 south to Tyler Ave, a distance of 1 mile. From Tyler Ave to Avenue 82 (2 miles north of the Riverside / Imperial County Line), CA 86 is currently a 4-lane expressway, but is slated to be upgraded to a 4-lane freeway by 2015. From Avenue 82 to Brandt Rd in Brawley it is an expressway with one exception. There is a short 4-lane non-controlled access segment in Westmorland with reduced speed limit and a stop sign on CA 86. A Westmoreland Bypass is proposed to be completed by 2015 so that the expressway can continue without interruption. A Brawley Bypass, connecting the CA 86 expressway north of town and the future CA 111 expressway south of town, is planned for completion in 2006 / 2007. South of Brawley, CA 86 is an expressway from 1.6 miles south of Pre-Bypass CA 78 in Brawley to Imperial Ave in El Centro. From there, its a 1.3 mile drive thru downtown El Centro to get to I-8.

CA 90 - Nixon Parkway:

CA 90 is an expressway along the Nixon Parkway in Yorba Linda. The expressway segment connects Yorba Linda Blvd to the CA 91 freeway.

US 97:
There is a 4.2 mile segment of US 97 near Dorris (near the Oregon border) that is planned to built as a Super-2 expressway. The expressway will run from south of Richardson Rd to .5 miles south of Indian Tom Lake Rd.

CA 99:
CA 99 is an expressway from CA 70 to I-5 north of Sacramento.

CA 99 will be upgraded to an expressway from Central Avenue to O’Banion Avenue south of Yuba City, with completion scheduled for winter 2006.

CA 99 south of Sacramento has 3 expressway segments, which are all slated to be upgraded to freeway:

  • The 5-mile stretch from Hammett Ave in Livingston to Atwater Blvd in Atwater
  • The 14-mile stretch from Childs Ave in Merced to Chowchilla Blvd in Chowchilla
  • The 2-mile stretch south of Chowchilla from CA 152 south to Avenue 20 1/2.

 

US 101:
North of San Francisco, US 101 is planned to be a freeway / expressway for its entire distance except for the the two-lane sections near Legett, near Benbow, thru Eureka, and the various 2-lane segments between Trindad and Crescent City. These will remain 2 lanes for environmental reasons. This will not be complete until after 2014.

US 101 has 14 expressway segments south of San Francisco

  • The 12-mile  stretch between the north end of the CA 156 multiplex in San Juan Bautista to Boronda Rd in Salinas

  • The 8-mile stretch between Airport Blvd in Salinas to the Chualar Bypass

  • The 4-mile stretch between the Chualar Bypass and Alta St in Gonzales

  • The 5-mile stretch between Arroyo Seco Rd in Soledad to El Camino Real north of Greenfield

  • The 9-mile stretch between El Camino Real south of Greenfield to Jolon Rd in King City

  • The 5-mile stretch between 10th St in San Miguel and Spring St in Paso Robles

  • The 7-mile stretch between CA 58 in Santa Margarita and Monterey St in San Luis Obispo

  • The 4-mile stretch between Fair Oaks Ave in Arroyo Grande to Los Berros Rd / Thompson Rd north of Nipomo

  • The 11-mile stretch between Clark Ave in Orcutt and CA 135 in Los Alamos

  • The 13-mile stretch between the east end of the Los Alamos Bypass and Avenue of the Flags in Buellton

  • The 7-mile stretch between Santa Rosa Rd in Buellton to the north end of the Las Cruces Bypass

  • The 10-mile stretch between CA 1 in  Las Cruces and Refugio Rd

  • The 4-mile stretch west of Goleta between Calle Real and Hollister Ave

  • The 2-mile stretch west of Ventura between Bates Rd / Rincon Point Rd and CA 1
